We know it's important and recommended by Red Nose that your baby sleeps near you for the first 6 - 12 months. We hear a lot about room sharing, what does this mean exactly? Bianca, our sleep consultant helps explain. What is room sharing? Room sharing is where your baby sleeps in the same room as you. This can be in a bassinet or even in a co sleeper next to your bed. Is room sharing beneficial or harmful? In most cases it is extremely beneficial especially in the newborn stage. Newborns feed regularly so being able to roll over and have them in proximity is very handy. There are so many benefits that the CoZee Breeze Bassinet Range offers that we know you'll love! Now that the weather is getting cooler, particularly here in Melbourne, we have a lot of parents asking us about keeping their baby warm enough in their CoZee Breeze Bassinet and what type of sleeping bag they should use. Can you please explain what a TOG rating is? What is a TOG? Thermal Overall Grade is an indication of how much insulated fabric is in a sleeping bag. They range from 0.2 all the way to 3.5. What tog rating should a newborn/baby wear in winter? Ideally for winter you would be looking at placing your baby in a 2.5-3.5 tog but this can be dependent on the temperature of the room. If you choose to use a panel heater in your baby’s room, I suggest not having to room too hot. You just want to take the chill off the room. I suggest also ensuring you have had the heater tested before use. I recommend the brand Ergo pouch for sleeping bags as they are very true to their tog rating as well as have a thermometer card that comes with it which you can place in your child’s room to help determine what Tog they need to wear. Would you recommend a different TOG for day sleeping and night sleeping? In most cases a room is a fraction warmer through the day with the natural sunlight hitting the window so it may be that you lower your tog to a lighter one through the day but again it is dependent on how steady the temperature of the room is day and night. Is there sleeping recommendations for what to sleep in with the CoZee’s side panels for airflow (so bubs don’t get cold)? The CoZee is likely to be a bit cooler through the night so ensuring your baby is warm enough. You can test this by feeling their torso to see if they are hot or cold. You can always add a tucked in blanket for extra warmth if needed Does room sharing cause separation anxiety? This can be dependent on age. Red nose guidelines suggest that babies should room share for the first 6-12 months of life to reduce the risk of SUDI (Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy). In most cases babies will transition well into their own room when it comes time to do so. iL Tutto's top picks for safe room sharing;
