How to get your bubs to sleep in the heat!

Getting your baby to sleep in the heat can be a real challenge. In summer ensure your baby’s room is not to hot and stuffy. You can invest in a good quality floor fan or a ceiling fan. I would encourage the fan does not blow directly on your baby as it can cause them to get cold in the early hours of the morning. Purchase a good quality sleeping bag specific to that time of year. These range from 0.2, 1, 2 or 2.5, 3.5 TOG swaddle +/- clothing layers as required.

Here are my tips to help your baby stay cool and comfortable in the heat.

  • Keep their room dark through the day.

  • Offer them a cool bath just before bed.

  • Ensure you have a good quality thermometer in their room. Most monitors will have this and alert you if the room becomes too hot.

  • Reduce the amount of clothing they are wearing. If it is a super-hot day or night a nappy and sleeping bag will be fine.

  • Ensure your baby is well hydrated through the day.

  • Create a breeze by opening the window if needed or use the iL Tutto CoZee Breeze Bassinet which has two mesh side panels for air flow. Ensure there is a flyscreen on the window to ensure bugs don’t get in. You can always shut this in the night if needed when the temperature drops.

  • Check their temperature by touching their torso. If they are sweating reduce layers or swap rooms to a cooler room.

  • In most cases the temperature will drop at some point in the early morning which is when your baby is likely to wake. Put aside a warmer tog to dress them in if they wake from being cold.
