Buying furniture for your nursery can be one of the most exciting and daunting experiences. There are so many fun items you can purchase for your baby, but it is important not to stress to much about it. So, do you need all the bits and bobs that everyone talks about? Short answer is no. I would focus on the big-ticket items to start with of importance and then sift through all the other items.
I remember with my first born I was so organised. I had everything ready to go by 20 weeks. With my second baby I was a fair bit more relaxed. If you are well and truly past this timeline don’t stress, it is not the be-all and end-all.
Choose a theme around 18 weeks. This can help you decide the colour theme you are going with. Will you be finding out the gender of your baby? If so, are you going more towards certain colours or keeping it gender neutral?
By around 20 weeks I would start ordering your furniture. These items may include cot, bassinet, change table, draws and rocking chair. If you are not wanting to set up the room, immediately make sure you have somewhere to store it all.
Around 30 weeks I would start setting up the nursery. This is the fun part. You get to see your planning become a reality. This is when I would also start getting your clothes, nappies, cot sheets etc sorted. You want to feel comfortable in this space as you will be spending a lot of time in here. Ensure you don’t put the cot or bassinet under a window that has drafts coming in.
In some cases, your baby may come early which is why I would ensure you wash all your little one’s clothing and pack your hospital bag by 36 weeks. By now the only thing you should have to worry about is calming your birth partner down on the way to the hospital.
