Fun things to do with kids - Nature Walks

As we start to enjoy the warm weather of summer, the outdoors is beckoning to us in all its splendid glory. With flowers in full bloom, birds chirping and bees buzzing, this is a wonderful time to experience the outdoors and all it has to offer. One of the easiest ways to do this is to simply grab a bucket, a hat, and take off on your very own nature walk!

The children love to collect as many different-coloured flowers as possible, and it becomes like a treasure hunt as we dash around the garden looking for the next colour. It’s lovely to stop and observe the smaller details – a lady bug hiding under the shedding bark of a tree, a trail of ants leading back to their home, or even a birds nest if you’re lucky!

Take the time to appreciate the feel of different leaves or tree trunks – it’s amazing how different they all can be to touch. It is also a great opportunity to discuss the names of plants (if you know them!), and talk about what plants need to stay strong and healthy.

When you have a nice little collection in the bucket, head back to the house and unload your stash. You may like to stick some of the brighter flowers onto some black paper for a gorgeous nature collage, or do a sorting activity depending on what you have found (seeds, sticks, leaves etc).

On this day, we decided that we had so many beautiful flowers we should create a table centerpiece. This glass IKEA bowl is perfect as we can see the flowers from on top of the water, as well as the stems under the water. It makes a great conversation piece as we sit down to each meal, and it brightens up the room with all the beautiful colours.

So get out and enjoy this gorgeous weather. We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful country – so make the most of it!
